Linda Mae Skeen June 29, 1945 - May 31, 2023
Linda Mae Skeen, 77, formerly of Bringle Ferry Rd., Denton passed away on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at Brookstone Retirement Center in Lexington.

A celebration of life service will be held 1:30 PM on Thursday, June 8, at First Baptist Church in Denton with Rev. Shane Smith officiating. A private inurnment will be held prior to the service at the Denton Town Cemetery.

Linda was born June 29, 1945, in Warwick County, VA to V.K. Skeen, Jr. and Eula Mae Snyder Skeen. As a lifetime member of First Baptist Church, she had served as a Sunday School Teacher, a Deacon, WMU member, and as a choir member. She graduated from Western Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She retired from Alamance County School System. Following her retirement Linda served as Director for Meals on Wheels in Denton. Her parents preceded in Linda death.

Kenneth Allen Henke November 24, 1932 - May 28, 2023
Kenneth Allen Henke, 90, of Seven Lakes South, West End, Sunday, May 28, 2023 at Hospice Haven of Richmond County in Rockingham. Memorial Services will be held at a later date.



Born in Flint, Michigan, he worked on the Line at General Motors. Mr. Henke was a veteran of the US Army. He was preceded in death by a grandchild.



He is survived by 4 sons, Timothy Henke, Kenneth Henke, Daniel Henke, and Kirt Henke; 2 daughters, Jacqeline Hoag (Geoffrey), and Antoinette Prevo; 6 Grandchildren; 3 Great-grandchildren.

Barney
Barney “Pete” Castle Fritz, 73, of Clyde Dr., Lexington, NC passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at his residence.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM on Sunday, May 28, at Old Fashioned Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Frankie Royal. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Fritz was born on June 20, 1949, in McDowell County, WV to Barney Jasper Fritz and Elizabeth Eliza Graham Fritz. He had worked in coal mines, furniture industry, and textile industry. He was a member of Old Fashioned Baptist Church in Denton.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by brothers, Clarence “Peewee”, Bernard, Frank, and Fred, and by sisters, Beverly, Peggy, and Ester.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Surratt Fritz of the home; son, Matthew Fritz of Lexington; daughter, Valerie Hinkle of Thomasville; 2 grandsons, Naham and Caleb Hinkle; brother, Roy Fritz; sisters, Agnes Deckard, Sharon Doss, and Alice Niece.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton and other times at the home on Clyde Dr. in Lexington.

Lynn Owens November 04, 1969 - May 23, 2023
Mitchell Lynn Owens, 53, of S. Main St. Ext., Denton, NC passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at Randolph Hospice House.

Lynn was born November 4, 1969, in Davidson County to Mozelle W. Owens and Mary Bradshaw Owens. He had worked as a cut off saw operator in the lumber industry and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, Lynn was also preceded in death by his brother, William Scott Owens; nephews, Cole and Calem Owens; and grand-daughters, Katherine and Kate Hadley.

He is survived by his wife, Renea Mincey Owens of the home; son, Brandon Collins (Tiffany Witt) of Denton; daughter, Amanda Smith (Joe Hadley) of Denton; 3 grandchildren, Joseph Hadley, Maisyn Collins, and Sterling Hadley; 3 great-nieces, Cayley, Aria, and Harper; special “brothers”, Lee “Peewee” Eubanks (Kandace) and Eddie Eubanks; uncle, David Owens; aunt, Pearl Morrow; brothers-in-laws, Tommy, Eddie, Phillip, and Justin; sister-in-law, Lea; and by numerous cousins.

Reba Cockman December 20, 1951 - May 22, 2023
Reba Kay Layne Cockman, age 71, of Clubhouse Drive, New London, NC departed this earthly life on May 22, 2023 surrounded by her caring family at her daughters home in Southmont, NC.



A funeral service will be held 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31, at Chandler’s Grove United Methodist Church, 2535 Blane Road, New London, NC 28127 with Rev. Steve Phillippi officiating. Interment will be at 3:00 p.m. at Lakeview Memorial Park, 3600 N. O’Henry Blvd., Greensboro, NC 27405.



Reba was born in Danville, VA on December 20, 1951. She was the first child of Katie Clifton and Troy Layne.



As a young girl Reba accepted Jesus as her Lord and savior. Her family relocated to Greensboro, NC in 1966. In 1968 Reba married her high school sweet Kenneth Luther Freeman, Jr. and from that union two daughters, Dionne and Teresa were born.



Reba chose to be a stay at home mother until the girls started school. With an interest in her husband’s home remodeling business, she immediately went to work with-in his company.
In 1991 Reba married her husband of 30 years Billy Wayne Cockman at Fairview Baptist Church in Greensboro. Being the adventurer she was she worked in various fields before realizing her love and natural talent for sewing. A skill she learned from her Grandma Clara Clifton as a young girl. She began making wedding and bridesmaids dresses and later she was part of the costume production team for The Wizard of Oz at the Carolina Theater in Greensboro. After retiring and moving to Badin Lake Resort in New London, NC she started Reba’s Alterations which took off quickly and kept her very busy providing a much needed service in her community.



Reba was a member of Chandler’s Grove United Methodist Church. She served the Lord as a choir member and Sunday School teacher, also lending a hand to the clothing closet, church yard sales, vacation bible school and more, which brought her true joy. Reba was a source of energy, beauty and inspiration; her smile would light up a room. She shared her genuine love for Jesus with enthusiasm and joy. In 2019, while battling breast cancer she remained faithful in prayer and trusting God. Her strong unshakable faith is her legacy. Reba loved the ocean, the mountains, golf cart rides with her Pomeranian named Little Girl, regular getaways with her daughters, Pickle Ball, water aerobics, live music and dancing. During these past few months with her daughters she gained strength and comfort from the YouTube program “Grace For Purpose”.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Billy Cockman; a sister, Susan Layne Bunton; daughters, Dionne Freeman Snead and Teresa Freeman Dillard; and a step-daughters, Deborah Cockman Iacobucci and Melissa Cockman Curtis; 6 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and many special friends.

Max Richard Dunn October 05, 1946 - May 13, 2013
Max Richard Dunn, 76, of 220 Alt. South, Candor, NC passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mr. Dunn was born October 5, 1946, in Montgomery County to Max Dunn and Carolyn Gray Kearns Dunn. He grew up attending First Baptist Church in Biscoe, served in the United States Army, and a had worked as a welder. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Gene Dunn.

He is survived by his son, Mark Richard Dunn of Candor; brother, Steven D. Dunn, Sr. of Biscoe; sister, Roma Lloyd of Mebane; 3 grandchildren, Mark Richard Dunn, Jr., Heather Nicole Wiggins, and Jeffrey Ryan Dunn; 3 great-grandchildren.

Earl Whitaker July 18, 1937 - May 16, 2023
Mr. Earl Arvin Whitaker, age 85, of Martin Farm Road, Denton NC passed away on May 16, 2023 at The Gray Brier in Trinity, NC.



A memorial service will be held at a later date.



Earl was born July 18, 1937 in Buncombe County, NC to Earl Louis Whitaker and Catherine Current Whitaker. He was a retired Police Officer from the High Point Police Department. Mr. Whitaker was a member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. Earl is a veteran of the U.S. Army. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife Margaret Whitaker.



Mr. Whitaker is survived by his daughters, Lisa Whitaker and Robin Hiatt both of Denton; brothers, Sam Whitaker of Brunswick, ME and Guy Whitaker of Murphy, NC; grandchildren, David Whitaker, Matthew Hiatt and Jacob Hiatt; 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild.
